HOW I SCORED AMAZON PRIME’S
BLACK & WHITE

First steps

The Brief

The film explores the intersection of high fashion and professional athletics through the lens of Giampaolo Sgura – one of fashion photography’s most influential names, with over 100 international Vogue covers and campaigns for Dolce & Gabbana, Armani, and Versace – as he photographs Juventus FC players for a striking visual study.

The musical challenge: Creating a sonic identity that honors both worlds simultaneously. The timeless elegance of art and the raw, explosive modernity of elite athleticism.

The director’s vision? “What does ‘timeless but contemporary’ sound like?”

The Approach

Finding the emotional core

I spent hours studying Sgura’s photographic work, investigating the way he see beauty, the precision of his lighting, the classical proportions. His photography carries weight and history but it never feels frozen in time.

The insight that shaped the entire score: don’t choose between classical and modern. Fuse them. The music needed to exist in both spaces at once.

“This is a film about transformation. What happens when elite athletes step into an artist’s world and become subjects of fine art?”

THE IDEA

Musical Architecture

The score is built on 2 core elements, each serving a distinct narrative purpose.

Below, you can listen first to the full composition and then explore the individual deconstructed layers.

The Full Score: Classical Meets Contemporary

This is the complete fusion: where the elegance of a string quartet coexists with electronic drum design. The two elements don’t fight for attention; they create tension through juxtaposition. Classical strings grounded by bass frequencies that shake your chest.

The Classical Foundation: Sgura’s Theme

A string quartet with classical harmony rules: the emotional backbone. This is Giampaolo’s musical signature. A deliberately simple melodic theme that recurs throughout the film, reimagined with different instruments and harmonic colors to match shifting narrative moments.

The Modern Edge: Electronic Rhythm

Sharp. Confident. Unapologetically contemporary. The electronic drums carry the same swagger the athletes bring: powerful, precise, almost provocative. The rhythm is intentionally abrasive and somehow sexy in its assertiveness.

The Results

  • Premiered exclusively on Amazon Prime Video (2023)
  • Featured in ICON Magazine during Milan Fashion Week

The collaboration reinforced what I’ve come to believe: the best creative work happens at intersections. Where disparate worlds collide and force you to find new solutions. Classical and contemporary. Fashion and sports. Elegance and power.

The challenge is finding where they become inseparable.
